PM Browne Highlights Century-Old Pipe Networks as Major Obstacle to Water Infrastructure Upgrades<\/strong><\/p>

Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned that aging water infrastructure is not only hampering national development efforts, but poses a shared challenge across the English-speaking Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on his weekly Pointe FM radio programme, the Prime Minister said that many countries in the region are grappling with century-old underground piping networks that have yet to be replaced.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a piping infrastructural problem within the entire English-speaking Caribbean. This applies to Barbados, Jamaica \u2013 you name it,\u201d Browne said. \u201cSince those pipes were actually laid \u2013 probably about 100 years ago \u2013 they have not been replaced. All countries \u2013 certainly English-speaking Caribbean countries \u2013 will find themselves having to re-pipe.\u201d<\/p>

Browne explained that Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s water woes have been compounded by the government\u2019s efforts to boost supply through increased reverse osmosis production, which is placing added pressure on fragile pipelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo what is happening now, as we keep increasing the amount of water through reverse osmosis water, and with all that pressure \u2013 the pipes keep bursting,\u201d he said. \u201cNow the problem is, you don\u2019t know when and where a pipe is gonna burst.\u201d<\/p>

He pointed to a recent incident in the capital to illustrate the issue, where fresh roadworks were disrupted by sudden pipeline failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust on Redcliffe Street, Public Works went in there and \u2018Barber-Greene\u2019d\u2019 the road because they were trying to spruce up St. John\u2019s \u2013 next thing, BOOM,\u201d he said.<\/p>

The Prime Minister said the country\u2019s ongoing road rehabilitation programme is revealing the extent of the deep-rooted infrastructural deficiencies that must be tackled in tandem. He argued that long-term development will only be possible if governments confront these outdated systems that remain widespread throughout the region.<\/p>
