Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> has welcomed a UK proposal to introduce judge-only trials as a solution to the mounting backlog in criminal cases, saying it affirms its own early adoption of the measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin said the UK\u2019s move validates Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> 2021 decision to shift to judge-alone trials amid a case backlog worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were pioneers in this regard,\u201d he told journalist Everton Barnes. \u201cThis confirms we are ahead of many nations \u2014 a trendsetter in judicial reform.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sir Steadroy added: \u201cWe continually punch above our weight. As some have said, \u2018we likle but we tallawah\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK <\/a><\/strong>proposal stems from recommendations by former senior judge Sir Brian Leveson, who was appointed by the Lord Chancellor to find ways to ease pressure on criminal courts.<\/p>

Sir Brian has warned of a potential collapse of the system and suggested judge-only trials, particularly in complex fraud and bribery cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are nearly 77,000 cases pending trial in England and Wales, leaving thousands in legal limbo.<\/p>
