Senior Extension Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture,\nSereno Benjamin is encouraging more persons to get involved in Greenhouse\nfarming.<\/p>

He made the point during a tour of the Green Castle\nAgricultural station where the Chinese Agricultural experts are working on the\nexperimental farm with a variety of crops, as part of the Agricultural\nTechnology Cooperation Project between Antigua and Barbuda and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin said that plans regarding the introduction of\ngreenhouses as part of this project are well in motion and this will boost the\nproduction of selected vegetables and other commodities that are difficult to\ngenerate in the open field at a certain time of the year.<\/p>

Another major component of the Antigua and Barbuda-China\nAgricultural Project will be the establishment of a Tissue Culture Lab which would\nplay a critical role in long term agriculture production.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin said that the greenhouse will provide scope for\nchanging the production system which is a plus for agriculture production\nespecially during the summer months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are going to be getting a Tissue Culture Lab and the\ngreenhouse would enable you to grow some of the plants you would be getting out\nof the Tissue Culture Laboratory until you are able to put them out in the\nfield,\u201d Benjamin stated.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin was asked if he thinks it\u2019s a cost factor why more\nfarmers are not engaged in greenhouse farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it may be a factor, Benjamin said he believes that\npeople need to see first- hand, the capabilities of this technology as a tool\nto further promote modern farming practices.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the ideas with having the Chinese set up some\ngreenhouses is for the demonstration effect. If farmers and other persons\ninterested in agriculture would be able visit a greenhouse and see the\ntechnology of how you operate a greenhouse and people are au fait with it, then\nit is very possible that we would see more persons doing this type of farming,\u201d\nBenjamin explained.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin meanwhile shared the difference between a Greenhouse\nand a Shade House- the latter of which is being used at Green Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A greenhouse\nis one in which the owner or farmer can control the internal environment of the\nstructure while a Shade House is built with a shade netting that determines the\namount of sunlight that comes in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Director\nof Agriculture Jedidiah Maxime meanwhile said that the Greenhouse technology\nthat the Chinese will be bringing, will be a Smart Computerized Greenhouse\nsystem, to include fertilizer injection and computerized monitoring systems for\ntemperature and the internal condition of the greenhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cThere are a lot of advantages of having such\na production system, it gives you more efficiency in terms of your management,\u201d\nMaxime stated.<\/p>\n
