Two filmmakers, walked away from the Cross Continental Forum (CCF<\/a><\/strong>) 2025 with grant funding to kickstart co-productions, thanks to support from the Inter-American Development Bank\u2014marking a tangible outcome of a weeklong event that moved beyond conversation and into transformation.<\/p>

he forum, presented by Caribbean Tales Media Group and the Department of Creative and Performing Arts at UWI Cave Hill, concluded its five-day convergence on June 18 with a bold message: The time to build is now. \u00ad<\/p>

Producers and delegates from across the Caribbean, Africa, Canada, the UK, Europe, and the U.S. issued a united call to design, fund, and activate local film ecosystems without waiting for the \u201cperfect\u201d conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held under the theme\u00a0Decolonising Co-Production<\/strong>, CCF <\/a><\/strong>2025 brought together over 50 producers, industry delegates, and creatives to interrogate the systems that determine whose stories are told\u2014and how. <\/p>

The forum challenged participants to shift their gaze from scarcity to opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Frances-Anne Solomon<\/strong>, CEO of CaribbeanTales and co-creator of the forum, emphasized: \u201cIt\u2019s great to tell the story\u2014we\u2019re already good at that. The real question is: where will you get the money? Who can you collaborate with to make your project real? These two points must always be front and centre.\u201d Rather than reinforcing narratives of lack, the forum served as a live lab for real-world opportunities for filmmakers to forge meaningful partnerships and build with what they have.\u00ad<\/p>

\u00adCCH Pounder\u00adAcclaimed actor, CCF Steering Group member, and activist\u00ad\u00adLorraine Toussaint<\/strong>\u00adCelebrated actor, producer, and cultural trailblazer\u00ad\u00adAva DuVernay<\/strong>\u00adRenowned filmmaker, producer, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DuVernay\u2019s virtual keynote was a standout moment. In a direct message to emerging creators, she dismantled the myth that big budgets make better films:\u201cIf your first idea moves you way outside your budget\u2014pivot. Use what\u2019s around you. The best films often happen in the smallest spaces.\u201d The forum tackled structural barriers to equity across key pillars:

 Day 2 \u2013 Decolonising Financing<\/strong>: Disrupting traditional funding streams to centre Black and Global Majority creators
 Day 3 \u2013 Decolonising Content<\/strong>: Preserving cultural authenticity while scaling reach
 Day 4 \u2013 Decolonising Distribution<\/strong>: Building inclusive, sustainable distribution models
 Day 5 \u2013 Decolonising Co-Production<\/strong>: Forging cross-border collaboration rooted in equity Key stakeholders\u2014including C15 Studios<\/strong>, Caribbean Creative Fund<\/strong>, and major partners such as the Inter-American Development Bank<\/strong>, Invest Barbados<\/strong>, Barbados Tourism and Marketing Inc.<\/strong>, Barbados Film and Television Association<\/strong>, Canada Media Fund<\/strong>, Picture NL<\/strong>, and the KZN Tourism and Film Authority<\/strong>\u2014joined the forum to offer funding insights and forge next-step pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felicia J. Persaud<\/strong>, CEO of Invest Caribbean, moderated a pivotal panel on financing and pointed to a lack of infrastructure: \u201cFew Caribbean countries have usable tax incentives or co-production treaties. While a handful\u2014like Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad & Tobago\u2014offer tax rebates, many, including Barbados, are still playing catch-up.\u201d\u00ad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s Next: Turning Vision Into Industry<\/strong>With over 30 producers participating in intensive sessions, 20 industry delegates engaged, and hundreds more reached through public programming, CCF 2025 delivered more than discussion\u2014it produced a working blueprint for regional film industry growth.\u00a0Key recommendations from forum attendees include:<\/strong>Establishing robust film tax incentive programs across the regionNegotiating formal co-production treaties with countries like Canada, South Africa, and the UKDeveloping inter-island agreements to enable seamless Caribbean collaboration.\u00a0As one of the few forums of its kind,\u00a0The Cross Continental Forum is a real-time lab for creative disruption<\/strong>, and with next year\u2019s application cycle opening soon, it continues to position Caribbean and Global South storytellers not on the margins\u2014but at the center of global storytelling futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
