Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s government has announced that the planned opening of the new cemetery<\/a><\/strong> on the Sir\u202fGeorge Walter Highway has been delayed due to the implementation of newly procured \u201cformalised and discreet\u201d burial methods.<\/p>

Director-General Maurice Merchant explained during Wednesday\u2019s post-Cabinet media briefing that the approach differs significantly from traditional methods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the intention is to move away from the typical \u201chuge backhoe\u201d burial style, replacing it with a more dignified and controlled process.<\/p>

\u201cIt will not be in the fashion that you are accustomed to\u2026 it will be more formalised and more discreet,\u201d Merchant told journalists, explaining that this shift required the procurement of specialised equipment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As a result of delays in obtaining the necessary machinery, the cemetery\u2019s June\u202f16 opening deadline was missed. Nevertheless, officials anticipate that burials will commence \u201cin a few short weeks,\u201d following a ceremonial blessing of the site, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new cemetery<\/a><\/strong> is intended to adhere to modern operational standards and provide an improved environment for mourning families and community members. <\/p>
