Ambassador Karen-Mae Hill Highlights Strengthened Ireland\u2013Antigua and Barbuda  Partnership on SIDS Priorities <\/strong><\/p>

Ambassador Karen-Mae Hill, Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> Non-Resident\u00a0 Ambassador to Ireland, has reaffirmed the deepening partnership between Antigua and Barbuda\u00a0 and Ireland, guided by Ireland\u2019s Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and\u00a0 Barbuda remains a key partner in shaping and implementing this Strategy.\u00a0<\/p>

During a visit to Dublin on May 19th <\/sup>which marked the 25th <\/sup>anniversary of diplomatic relations  between Antigua and Barbuda and Ireland, Ambassador Hill engaged in a series of meetings and  activities focused on celebrating Irish-Antigua and Barbuda relations over the years as well as  looking ahead to new aspects of this relationship in a fast-changing geopolitical landscape. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Meetings were held with the Global Programmes Unit of the Small Island Developing States\u00a0 (SIDS) Directorate of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to discuss the SIDS Ireland\u00a0 Fellows Programme and the outcomes of the 2024 SIDS Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ireland supported this\u00a0 conference both financially and technically.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Hill also met with the Climate Unit of\u00a0 the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to explore ongoing collaboration in the blue\u00a0 economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also engaged with representatives from the EU Presidency Policy Unit and the EU\u00a0 and Trade Policy Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to discuss Ireland\u2019s\u00a0 upcoming 2026 Presidency of the Council of the European Union.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Hill took the opportunity to engage with Ireland on its upcoming Presidency of the\u00a0 Council of the European Union scheduled for July to December 2026.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She encouraged that special\u00a0 attention be given to the interests and priorities of SIDS during Ireland\u2019s presidency notwithstanding the many other global issues on the EU agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As such, she advocated for\u00a0 continued Irish leadership in amplifying the SIDS agenda at the European level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ireland reaffirmed its support for the operationalisation of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for\u00a0 SIDS (\u201cABAS\u201d) including the planned Centre of Excellence for Data and the Debt Sustainability\u00a0 Support Service, both to be headquartered in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ireland\u2019s engagement at the\u00a0 United Nations, European Union, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and\u00a0 Development also supports advocacy around improved access to funding, water security, and\u00a0 implementation of the Multi-Dimensional Vulnerability Index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the discussions, particular attention was given to the Ireland-SIDS Fellows Programme,\u00a0 through which Antigua and Barbuda has continued to benefit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Our Shared Ocean initiative,\u00a0 and training partnerships with institutions such as UNCTAD, the WTO, and University College\u00a0 Dublin were also highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Antiguans and Barbudans to date have been beneficiaries of\u00a0 Irish-sponsored scholarships reflecting Ireland\u2019s commitment to building long-term skills and\u00a0 leadership in SIDS.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discussions also focused on Ireland\u2019s pledge of \u20ac225 million annually in climate finance to include\u00a0 \u20ac25 million for the Loss and Damage Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joint priorities include advancing the blue economy\u00a0 through the ProBlue Trust Fund and Blue Action Fund, and supporting climate-resilient initiatives\u00a0 across the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ireland also funds the World Maritime University\u2019s BBNJ Clinic Programme,\u00a0 which supports Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in\u00a0 addressing the complexities of ratifying and implementing the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond\u00a0 National Jurisdiction (BBNJ).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Hill met with senior leaders from the National Museum of Ireland, the National\u00a0 Library, and the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, exploring avenues for cultural exchange and\u00a0 heritage collaboration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continued advocacy for Aer Lingus to operate flights from Ireland to\u00a0 Antigua and Barbuda remains firmly on the agenda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a previous visit in 2023, Ambassador Hill\u00a0 joined EPIC \u2013 The Irish Emigration Museum to launch the \u201cEntangled Islands \u2013 Ireland and the\u00a0 Caribbean\u201d exhibition which will be showcased in Antigua and Barbuda in 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibition explores 400 years of Irish links to the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Ambassador Hill shared details on planning for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads\u00a0 of Government Meeting which will be hosted in Antigua and Barbuda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting discussed\u00a0 possible areas of support including participation in side-events on ocean research and marine based economic development.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIreland remains one of our strongest partners\u2014committed, consistent, and collaborative.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together we are driving sustainable solutions that serve the real needs of Small Island Developing\u00a0 States,\u201d said Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Antigua and Barbuda,<\/a><\/strong> Ireland has a partner in the Caribbean with shared roots from the past,\u00a0 shared values in the present and a shared vision and ambition for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is much we\u00a0 can do together, for the benefit of our economies, our peoples and our shared ocean\u201d, Sharon\u00a0 Lennon, Head of Ireland\u2019s Office for the Caribbean stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
