The Registrar of the Antigua and Barbuda\nIntellectual Property & Commerce Office, Ms. Ricki Camacho, described the\nrecently passed Patent Act 2018 and Patent Regulations 2018 as a major\nmilestone for the twin island state.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ricki Camacho explained that for years the\ndepartment, along with various agents and attorneys have been asking authorities\nto put regulations in place which will outline the guidelines for the act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Registrar mentioned that with both the\nact and regulations, the Antigua and Barbuda Intellectual Property will be even\nmore compliant with international standards.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Camacho said that, \u201cwe are hoping to join\nthe Budapest treaty and Patent Law Treaty and that would make us more compliant\nwith TRIPS as well as European partnership Agreement that mandates our\naccession to these treaties.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the New Patent Act and Patent\nRegulations can be found on the Registry\u2019s website: abipco.gov.ag.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A circular dated February 4, 2019 was\nissued to the Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association and the agents on the\nimplementation of the New Act and Regulations as it pertains to examination,\nfees and grant.  This circular is also on\nthe Registry website for those that wish to read it.  Any interested person can come to the\nRegistry for further information. <\/p>

Minister of Legal Affairs, Attorney\nGeneral, the Hon. Steadroy Cutie Benjamin said he thought it fit as a\ndeveloping country that Antigua and Barbuda ought to be in compliance with these\nvery important aspects of our development as it relates to patents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin said there was a need to enact\nmodern intellectual property legislation which will ensure proper regulations\nwhere the sector is concerned. He continued that he is happy that the void has been\nfilled and with the government thrust, this Ministry acted on the government\u2019s\nmandate.<\/p>

He noted that the Gaston led\nadministration promotes the ease of doing business as they seek to attract\ninvestors to the twin island state. <\/p>

The Legal Affairs Minister said with the\nright legislations in place it will give the Intellectual Property department\nthe necessary regulations that will promote such practices.<\/p>\n
