SOURCE- Buenos Aire Sherald- <\/strong>A high-ranking official from the United States Department of State said that regimes from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, who are allies to Iran, are \u201cenemies of humanity\u201d. Following the U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, they expressed that this is \u201ca great time\u201d for Latin America to choose a side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday is a great time for the countries in the region to decide which side they are on: if they are going to support a regime that is a state promoter of terrorism, or which other stance they are going to take,\u201d said the official in response to a question made by the Herald<\/em> in a press conference with Spanish-speaking outlets. The identity of the official was kept anonymous from the press given it was an informative conference.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a decision each country has to consider,\u201d she added. She also mentioned that the attack carried out by the U.S. against Iran on Saturday was \u201cprecise\u201d and that it targeted \u201c300 Iranian nuclear facilities.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The official reiterated comments made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in February, when he said that the Nicaraguan, Venezuelan and Cuban governments are \u201cenemies of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAbout the attacks, I will only say that it was a precise attack,\u201d the official said after the Herald asked whether the U.S. would try to influence Iran\u2019s Latin American allies, such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua, to change their position in light of the recent events.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The press conference was carried with the goal of sharing the U.S.\u2019 priorities ahead of the Organization of the American States (OAS) 55\u00b0 General Assembly this week. The official said that, on Wednesday, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau will arrive in St. John\u2019s, Antigua and Barbuda, to participate in the assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assembly, she said, will \u201coffer a platform to reaffirm the U.S.\u2019s leadership\u201d in the Americas \u201cand support democratic governability and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>

The official also said the U.S. will show \u201cstrong support\u201d for the candidacy of Rosa Mar\u00eda Pay\u00e1 to become a member of the Inter-American Commission on Human rights. Pay\u00e1 is a Cuban dissident, daughter of Oswaldo Pay\u00e1, a Cuban government opposition member who died in 2012. Secretary Rubio personally nominated Rosa Mar\u00eda Pay\u00e1 before the IACHR.<\/p>

\u201cPay\u00e1\u2019s nomination acknowledges her unwavering commitment to democracy, freedom and human rights in our entire hemisphere,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that the Department of State expects to hold important conversations with the regional allies of the U.S. regarding \u201ctangible and long-lasting solutions to the crisis in Haiti,\u201d which is \u201csevere\u201d amid the displacement of \u201cover a million Haitians\u201d over gang violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe OAS has an important role to play in this crisis. The United States is willing to perform a leading role in this initiative and to collaborate with the OAS in the efforts toward a true change.\u201dUS Department of State: \u2018This is a great time for the region to decide which side they are on\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
