ST. JOHN\u2019S, Antigua, June 18, 2025 \u2014 On Wednesday, June 19,\u00a0Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre\u00a0(SLBMC<\/a><\/strong>) will join the global community in observing World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, standing in solidarity with individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease (SCD).<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cGlobal Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy,\u201d highlights the critical need for awareness, early detection, and community education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the launch of SLBMC\u2019s Universal Newborn Screening Program in September 2020, a total of 4,666 newborns have been screened for sickle cell disease and trait. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This program has been instrumental in identifying both affected individuals and carriers, providing families with early, life-saving information.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe importance of knowing your sickle cell status cannot be overstated,\u201d said Dr. Claudine Richardson, Consultant Paediatrician and Acting Chair of the Paediatric Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe diagnosis of sickle cell disease doesn\u2019t just affect the person with the condition\u2014it affects the entire family. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Education is essential, and early screening gives families the tools they need to plan, prepare, and advocate for better outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital\u2019s screening program has also shed light on a concerning trend\u2014many fathers are unaware of their sickle cell status, which can have implications for family planning and risk awareness. <\/p>

SLBMC continues to advocate for wider public testing, emphasizing that knowledge of one\u2019s status is important for all individuals, not just expectant parents.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sickle cell disease is a lifelong condition that can cause severe complications, but with proper education, monitoring, and early intervention, the quality of life for affected individuals can be greatly improved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SLBMC <\/a><\/strong>remains committed to advancing public health by empowering individuals and communities to take action through informed decision-making and continued awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
