Ministry of Works Tackles Flood Risks as Hurricane Season Begins<\/strong><\/p>

As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially opens, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has moved to strengthen flood prevention efforts following recent flash floods and warnings of an active season ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed during the post-Cabinet briefing that two long-boom excavators have been assigned to the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) \u201cto clear drains, to clear ponds and waterways.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was a topic that occupied a lot of discussion in the Cabinet,\u201d Merchant said, referencing the meeting attended by NODS Director Sherrod James and Deputy Director Craig Cole. \u201cDiscussions were also held in terms of some of the bridges and some of the roads and drains in particular that run on the major roads \u2014 what is required to ensure that flooding does not occur.\u201d<\/p>

He noted that the Ministry of Works \u201ctook note of some of the advice or some of the information provided by the NODS department,\u201d specifically regarding the \u201cdrain or the bridge at Pickett\u2019s Main Road that was addressed by NODS,\u201d which experiences frequent flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans are also underway to procure three purpose-built emergency shelters, designed to withstand storm conditions and accommodate displaced individuals. \u201cThese purpose-built shelters could be utilized for them \u2014 fully equipped and ideal for storm conditions,\u201d Merchant said, adding that \u201cthey want to procure one of these purpose-built shelters for Barbuda and two for Antigua.\u201d<\/p>

With the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasting a 60% chance of an above-normal hurricane season, Cabinet has also agreed to improve NODS\u2019 communications infrastructure. \u201cCabinet says whatever the cost is going to be, this must be presented to Cabinet and seek the approval of Cabinet,\u201d Merchant explained. \u201cOf course, Cabinet will act because communication, as you know, would be vital particularly during storm season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is urging the public to take the necessary precautions as the season progresses.<\/p>
