Dear Editor,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am compelled to raise a growing and deeply concerning issue that affects thousands of road users across St. John\u2019s and its environs: the persistent failure of\u00a0traffic lights<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at several major intersections.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Imagine driving and approaching an intersection where the light isn\u2019t working, no one wants to stop, and everyone barrels through as if we\u2019re in a\u00a0rallycross race.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Can you imagine how dangerous that is for the public? But the real question is: who cares?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me take you on a drive and point out these faulty\u00a0stop lights. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We begin on Independence Avenue, right there by\u00a0Everyday Gas Station, wait still on\u00a0<\/a>Independence Avenue, just a few meters up outside APUA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s Head over to All Saints Road, by\u00a0Robinson Gas Station, an area often crossed by children on their way to and from school.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s go into All Saints now, up the road from the police, right there by the gas station, that\u2019s another intersection used by school children.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Now, let\u2019s swing by the corner of\u00a0Fort Road, Dickenson Bay Street, and Popeshead Streets, another malfunctioning signal, in a zone heavily used by school children and pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh and I won\u2019t forget Valley Road, that by King George V Grounds dark again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last stop, the most troubling of them all, the broken stoplight directly outside\u00a0Golden Grove Primary School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These aren\u2019t backroads or low-traffic areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are routes travelled daily by drivers, buses, pedestrians, and our children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The absence of working traffic signals has turned these intersections into chaotic free-for-alls, where congestion and near misses are part of the daily commute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all these, the one that keeps me up at night is the light outside\u00a0Golden Grove Primary School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young students are crossing that road during peak traffic hours without the protection of a functioning pedestrian signal. It\u2019s not just dangerous, it\u2019s a tragedy waiting to happen. And it\u2019s entirely preventable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traffic lights are not cosmetic features of urban life; they are essential infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They maintain order, prevent collisions, and save lives. When they fail and continue to go unrepaired the risks escalate. The silence from the responsible agencies makes it even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am calling on the\u00a0Ministry of Works\u00a0and the\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board\u00a0to act with urgency. These lights <\/a><\/strong>must be fixed now. The safety of our citizens, especially our children, depends on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
