Joseph: WHO Budget Cuts Could Jeopardise Global Health Programmes, but China Pledges $500M Lifeline<\/strong><\/p>

Senator the Honourable Michael Joseph<\/a><\/strong> has warned that major funding cuts to the World Health Organization (WHO) could have serious consequences for global health initiatives, including programmes that benefit the Caribbean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks follow the withdrawal of the United States and Argentina from the WHO<\/a><\/strong>\u2014moves he described as deeply consequential.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s World Health Assembly\u2026 was for the very first time that the U.S. wasn\u2019t at the seat,\u201d Joseph said during a recent ABS interview. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe U.S. contributes about $300 million to the annual budget of WHO\u2026 so having that removed means WHO is now looking at cutting about 1,500 to 2,000 employees\u2026 and that has implications for programmes throughout the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph, who represented Antigua and Barbuda alongside Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kamara De Castro at the 78th WHA in Geneva, explained that the funding gap is already affecting the WHO\u2019s global reach, including support for smaller developing countries like those in the Caribbean.<\/p>

Despite the uncertainty, there was a glimmer of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had the Chinese government step up at the WHA and say, \u2018We\u2019re going to contribute 500 million U.S. dollars to the budget over the next three years,\u2019\u201d Joseph revealed. \u201cSo this is about 150 million U.S. additional that they\u2019ve gotten.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He added that other global actors were being encouraged to contribute.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe WHA was making this argument that we need more countries like the European Union to step forward, the Arab countries to step forward, and to make greater pledges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the face of WHO\u2019s budget concerns, Joseph stressed the continued importance of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which remains active in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere hasn\u2019t been any indication from the U.S. of the intent to step out of PAHO\u2026 so we\u2019re still quite faithful that we will have those programmes\u2026 remaining in the Caribbean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph emphasised the importance of multilateralism and bilateral cooperation in securing regional health outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore and more countries are stepping up and saying, \u2018We can\u2019t let this impact us,\u2019 because if we don\u2019t do more, we\u2019re going to have severe implications.\u201d<\/p>\n
