As countries face increasingly steep bills from natural hazards, the true cost of disasters is actually 10 times higher than previously estimated, with far-reaching effects across healthcare, housing, education and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s according to a report<\/a> released Tuesday by the UN\u2019s disaster risk reduction agency, UNDRR<\/a>.<\/p>

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While current estimates suggest the global economic impact of natural emergencies \u2013 such as earthquakes, landslides and floods \u2013 amounts to around $200 billion annually, this figure represents \u201conly a fraction of the real costs<\/strong>,\u201d said Jenty Kirsch-Wood, head of global risk analysis for UNDRR.<\/p>

The true cost is closer to $2.3 trillion, she added, warning that the world has been \u201cchronically underestimating and undermeasuring the impact of disasters<\/strong>\u201d on sustainable development progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catastrophic floods<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A person born in 1990 has a 63 per cent chance of experiencing a once-in-a-century catastrophic flood in their lifetime. For a child born in 2025, that probability rises to 86 per cent.<\/p>

\u201cThose events are affecting us all,\u201d said Ms. Kirsch-Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost of extreme weather is not measured solely in destroyed infrastructure, but also in lost years of health, education and opportunity.<\/p>

Unsustainable humanitarian response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Healthcare, education, and employment are increasingly disrupted by emergencies, leading to higher national debt and slower recovery \u2013 particularly in already vulnerable countries.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This has contributed to \u201can unsustainable and unsupportable humanitarian response<\/strong>,\u201d Ms Kirsch-Wood added, as nations grapple with increasingly frequent and severe climate shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losses have doubled<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to UNDRR, financial losses from disasters have doubled in the past two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency\u2019s new report outlines how the international community can collaborate to make sustainable investments that build resilience to future disasters and ease pressure on public finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the damage caused by climate-related events is preventable, Ms. Kirsch-Wood stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge ahead, she said, is to \u201cbetter align our financing systems\u201d and \u201cuse public and private investment to make sure that we\u2019re optimally reducing the burden on governments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 240 million people were internally displaced by disasters between 2014 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China<\/strong> and the Philippines<\/strong> each reported over 40 million displaced persons, while India, Bangladesh and Pakistan<\/strong> saw numbers ranging from 10 to 30 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The steep costs associated with climate events \u2013 and the debt they generate \u2013 disproportionately affect developing countries and vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vulnerable hardest-hit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, North America <\/strong>recorded $69.57 billion in direct disaster-related losses \u2013 more than any other region \u2013 but this amounted to just 0.23 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By contrast, Micronesia<\/strong> incurred only $4.3 billion in losses, but this represented a staggering 46.1 per cent of its GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNDRR report \u201cshows the eye-watering losses inflicted by disasters today, which hit vulnerable people the hardest\u2026 and it demonstrates that, on our current trajectory, costs will continue to mount as the climate crisis worsens<\/strong>,\u201d said UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut it also illustrates that, by boosting and sustaining investment in disaster risk reduction and prevention, we can slow that trend and reap economic benefits \u2013 saving lives and livelihoods while driving growth and prosperity to help reach our Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private sector role<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Proven tools \u2013 such as flood protection infrastructure and early warning systems \u2013 can help the worst-affected nations curb the rising costs of climate-related disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increased investment in risk reduction and resilience can reverse current trends, said the head of UNDRR, Special Representative Kamal Kishore, citing the example of protection from overflowing rivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen riverbank communities have access to scientific tools for land use planning, resources for building flood protection systems, and early warning systems, they not only reduce damages and losses from floods, but also create conditions for prosperity and sustainable growth<\/strong> in their communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The private sector, UNDRR emphasised, must also step up to \u201cfill the protection gap that leaves many countries in a worsening spiral of repeated disasters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
