No Job Losses Expected Under New College Merger, Says Minister<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consolidation of several tertiary institutions into the newly established Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS)<\/a><\/strong> will not lead to job losses, Education Minister Daryll Matthew has confirmed.<\/p>

Speaking on ABS\u2019s First Look<\/em>, Matthew said the merger aims to streamline operations and improve efficiency without displacing staff.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no individual \u2014 and I want to repeat \u2014 there is no individual who will be sent home,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the reform, institutions such as the Antigua State College, the Hospitality Training Institute, and the Abbott Centre will be integrated into one umbrella body, each functioning as a school within ABCAS.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>

The goal is to reduce administrative duplication, harmonize academic offerings, and better utilize infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthew acknowledged that the restructuring may result in changes to staff roles, particularly in areas like accounting and administration, but assured that personnel will be absorbed elsewhere in the public service where necessary.<\/p>

\u201cThere may be some departments where you\u2019ll have excess capacity\u2026 but we will ensure that they are absorbed within the public service,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The education minister explained that having multiple institutions offering similar programmes \u2014 such as associate degrees in business administration \u2014 was inefficient for a country with limited human resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a small population,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just is not the most efficient way to operate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the merger will also improve classroom utilization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the ABIIT Centre is largely unused during the day, while the Antigua State College faces overcrowding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By combining resources, ABCAS will be able to maximize space and deliver a more unified, accessible academic experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each campus will be renamed to honour distinguished national educators, including Dr. Alister Francis and the late Sir Eustace Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill establishing the new college was recently debated in Parliament and is part of broader efforts to enhance access to quality tertiary education in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
