Browne Suggests Political Interference in Classrooms Must Be Addressed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> has expressed concern over what he described as partisan political activity among a small number of educators, suggesting that some teachers may be influencing students with \u201cdark values\u201d and political agendas.<\/p>

Speaking on the Browne and Browne<\/em> show on Pointe FM, the Prime Minister said he received reports that some teachers are allegedly introducing political bias into the classroom and undermining professional standards.<\/p>

\u201cSome of them, they have issues, you know,\u201d Browne said. \u201cAnd they take them into the classroom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They take the politics in the classroom. Our children \u2014 they\u2019re role models. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ve been paid to educate our children, not to lead them astray and not to get them into parties and politics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He claimed that several principals and teachers had privately voiced concerns about the politicisation of classrooms but were hesitant to speak publicly for fear of backlash from union leaders.<\/p>

\u201cMany of them would have spoken to me \u2014 even principals,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018Hey look, we really not part of this foolishness, you know, but if we go out there and go against them, they\u2019re going to call us snitches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re going to attack us.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister <\/a><\/strong>clarified that the concerns do not apply to the majority of educators but maintained that action is needed to ensure professionalism is upheld across the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis only applies to a very small percentage of teachers, so again, not painting the profession with a broad brush,\u201d Browne noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut you have some not-too-kosher elements in there who we\u2019re going to have to address.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While dismissing the idea of widespread dismissals, Browne floated the possibility of reassignments for those found to be negatively impacting students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe in firing people. Maybe move them out, put them somewhere else \u2014 otherwise than that, they\u2019re probably going to create some significant problems for our children in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded by emphasizing the need for internal oversight and collaboration between the Director of Education and school principals to preserve the classroom as a neutral, professional space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a matter that the Director of Education and the principals may have to collaborate on to ensure that our teachers remain fully professional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
