Education Minister Denies PS Reassignment Linked to Teachers’ Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Education Minister Daryll Matthew<\/a><\/strong> has dismissed suggestions that the recent reassignment of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education is a response to recent protest action by teachers.<\/p>

Speaking on ABS this morning, Matthew said changes within the public service are routine and should not be interpreted as punitive.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know that the impasse, as you call it, has sparked any changes in the public service,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPermanent secretaries and senior civil servants are shifted around from time to time. It has happened in the past.\u201d<\/p>

He added that while the reassignment may have coincided with the recent standoff between teachers and the ministry, the move should not be viewed as disciplinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want it to come across as if this is some sort of punishment to any individual. There are times where a change of environment is good,\u201d Matthew <\/a><\/strong>explained.<\/p>

The minister also praised the former Permanent Secretary, saying their working relationship had always been professional and respectful.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always maintained a good relationship [with her]. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t think of any instance where I have felt as if the PS is not acting in accordance with the law and her duties and in support of the policies of the government,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe mindset that this may be some sort of punishment method to her is totally incorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthew said he looks forward to working with the new leadership at the ministry as they continue efforts to strengthen the education sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
