PM Browne Accuses Political Operatives Within Teachers\u2019 Union of Undermining Education System<\/strong><\/p>

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has accused elements within the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT) of using recent industrial action for political purposes, warning that their actions risk harming students and undermining the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Pointe FM on Saturday, Mr Browne said he believes the leadership of the union includes individuals \u201cwho are political activists of the UPP\u201d and are leveraging the dispute over unpaid allowances to score political points.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are certain political elements within the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers who are also activists of the UPP, who are now trying to bring politics into the fray,\u201d Mr Browne said. \u201cThey\u2019re not coming with clean hands.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister said that while the government acknowledges the right of teachers to advocate for their entitlements, the continuation of the strike even after nearly all payments had been processed was excessive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy Wednesday there were only six individuals who had not received their cheques,\u201d he said. \u201cWe pleaded with union officials \u2014 it\u2019s only six people now, please go back to work.\u201d<\/p>

He added: \u201cThat type of behaviour is disproportionate. It is excessive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strike action came amid delays in disbursing allowances for school administrators and technical subject teachers. Government officials said all remaining cheques had been issued by Friday.<\/p>

Mr Browne insisted that most teachers remained dedicated to their students and should not be painted with the same brush. However, he criticised the union\u2019s leadership for allowing \u201ca loud minority\u201d to drive the agenda.<\/p>

\u201cIf we allow those individuals to exercise an outsized influence on the teachers\u2019 union, they\u2019re going to become destructive,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ll undermine the progress of our youth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister concluded with a broader appeal, saying: \u201cOur children can\u2019t stand up for themselves \u2014 we have a responsibility to protect them. And if individuals are taking disproportionate action that could prejudice their development, then we have to call it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
