PM Browne: \u201cWe Have No Quarrels with the Teachers\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has said the government holds no animosity toward teachers amid recent industrial action over unpaid allowances, insisting that his administration remains supportive of educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Pointe FM on Saturday, Mr Browne stated: \u201cThe executive has no quarrels with the teachers or the teachers\u2019 union for that matter.\u201d He added, \u201cThey have come to the Cabinet on several occasions, and everything they have asked for, we have given to them.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Teachers across the country staged a week-long strike over outstanding lab coat and telephone allowances, prompting concerns about the impact on students sitting major exams. The government said that payments had been issued incrementally and confirmed that all outstanding cheques were disbursed by Friday.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mr Browne expressed concern about the continuation of the strike after the payments were made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy Wednesday, there were only six individuals who had not received their cheques,\u201d he said. \u201cWe pleaded with union officials\u2014\u2018It\u2019s only six people now. Please go back to work.\u2019\u201d<\/p>

He criticised the strike as \u201cdisproportionate,\u201d especially during the third school term when national assessments and external examinations are underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister also said the government had shown \u201cfull commitment\u201d to all public servants and noted that the issue was not due to a lack of resources but administrative delays.<\/p>

\u201cI was actually on their side. I was calling public servants, including the Chief Establishment Officer, saying, \u2018Look, process the documentation. Expedite the documentation so they can get the pay,\u2019\u201d Mr Browne said.<\/p>

He reiterated that the majority of teachers remained dedicated and professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying we don\u2019t have empathetic and sympathetic teachers\u2014teachers who have gone beyond the call of duty,\u201d he said. \u201cWe value our teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While acknowledging some dissatisfaction, the prime minister said that leadership within the teachers\u2019 union needed to ensure actions taken were measured and not politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
