Antigua and Barbuda <\/a><\/strong>will remain a friend to all and enemy to none, Prime Minister Gaston Browne declared, stressing the country\u2019s right to seek infrastructure funding from China without compromising U.S. relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following high-level discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Prime Minister Browne reiterated that Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s foreign policy is grounded in pragmatism, development needs, and mutual respect.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur relationship with China is based on economic development\u2014primarily infrastructure,\u201d Browne said. \u201cWe have no military cooperation with China, and we\u2019ve acted solely in our national interest.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Browne argued that the Caribbean\u2019s development has benefited significantly from Chinese funding over the past three decades, noting that without that support, Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> would have been \u201ca significantly different place\u2014and for the worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to U.S. apprehensions about geopolitical influence in the region, Browne said such concerns were misplaced. \u201cWe are too small to have enemies,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we seek is to leverage our foreign policy to serve our people.\u201d<\/p>

He emphasized that maintaining strong ties with both the United States and China is not contradictory, and urged the world\u2019s two largest economies to de-escalate their trade disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe kind of muscular rhetoric and heavy tariffs\u2014145% in some cases\u2014hurt developing nations like ours,\u201d Browne warned. \u201cThese trade wars have real consequences. They risk reversing the progress we\u2019ve made since COVID.\u201d<\/p>

The Prime Minister concluded by advocating for greater U.S.-China collaboration, calling it vital for global stability and the resilience of small island states. \u201cWe need another ten years of uninterrupted growth to secure our future. A global trade war undermines that.\u201d<\/p>
