Labour Minister Promises Modernisation of Workmen\u2019s Compensation Law<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Workmen\u2019s Compensation Act, in place since 1957, is set to undergo long-overdue reform, according to Labour Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The minister announced the initiative during a Labour Day interview on ABS, describing the current law as outdated and ill-equipped to address the realities of the modern workplace.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must have precise, modern legislation to ensure fair compensation for workers who suffer occupational injuries,\u201d Sir Steadroy <\/a><\/strong>said. \u201cBack in 1957, the main industries were sugar and manufacturing. Today, we\u2019re dealing with tourism, construction, banking, and new technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He confirmed that the government intends to introduce amendments to the law later this year following consultations with key stakeholders, including unions, legal experts, and employer groups.<\/p>

The reforms are expected to address a wide range of contemporary concerns, including the classification of workplace injuries, eligibility for benefits, and timelines for compensation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister also hinted at stronger protections for workers in informal and emerging sectors.<\/p>

\u201cThis government is committed to ensuring that no worker is left behind\u2014whether they are in traditional fields or modern industries,\u201d he said.<\/p>

The review of the Workmen\u2019s Compensation Act forms part of a broader labour reform agenda announced by the Labour Minister, which includes a comprehensive update of the Labour Code, new paternity leave legislation, a possible four-day work week, and a reassessment of the national minimum wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir Steadroy stressed that the protection and welfare of workers remain central to the government\u2019s development strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are determined to align our labour laws with the needs and challenges of the 21st century,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is about dignity, fairness, and justice in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
