Plans to redevelop the Fort James<\/a><\/strong> area are being refocused to include the construction of a marina north of Rat Island, with an emphasis on creating new opportunities for local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst told Monday\u2019s post-Cabinet press briefing that while earlier proposals involving international cruise lines have stalled, the government is now pursuing a new vision for the historic site.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe anticipate that a marina could generate significant economic activity, from fuel and water services to food supplies and vending operations,\u201d Hurst said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He explained that the development would follow a model similar to Falmouth Harbour and Nelson\u2019s Dockyard, where ancillary businesses have flourished around marina activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government plans to ensure that small businesses and local vendors are able to benefit directly from the project, alongside larger service providers.<\/p>

Although Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines had previously expressed interest in a Fort James project, those plans are now on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurst said the new direction would capitalise on unused land and transform the area into a vibrant, eco-friendly destination.<\/p>

No firm timeline for the marina\u2019s construction has yet been announced, but officials are expected to unveil more detailed plans following further consultations.<\/p>
