The government of Antigua and Barbuda is expressing confidence that recent urban renewal initiatives in St John\u2019s will boost the city\u2019s attractiveness without disrupting economic activity.<\/p>

Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst said at Monday\u2019s post-Cabinet press briefing that measures such as the introduction of a pedestrian-only zone on Saturdays and the reorganisation of vendor spaces are designed to enhance the aesthetics of the capital while supporting small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are making arrangements to ensure that vendors continue to sell their goods, but in a more orderly and attractive environment,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cThis is part of transforming St John\u2019s into a city that better serves both residents and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who pass through each year.\u201d<\/p>

Under the new plan, vendors will be relocated from crowded sidewalks to designated areas, including spaces currently used for parking. Street closures east of the V.C. Bird bust up to Vivian Richards Street will allow pedestrians to move freely on Saturday mornings.<\/p>

Hurst added that while the primary focus is on improving the visual appeal of the city, economists within the Ministry of Finance will monitor the economic effects of the changes to ensure that vendors are not adversely impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials hope that the new urban design will enhance the shopping experience in St John\u2019s, positioning it as a more vibrant and welcoming destination for both locals and tourists.<\/p>
