The Central Board of Health is continuing efforts to spot the Aedes Aegypti mosquito which is known for spreading Chikungunya, Zika and Dengue fever. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The\nMinistry of Health recently reported that there are ten suspected cases of\nDengue Fever in Antigua and Barbuda, between April 2018 and January 2019. Only\ntwo of those cases have been confirmed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the country is not\nexperiencing an outbreak, the Central Board of Health (CBH) has put a strategic\nplan in place to get rid of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

According to Deputy Chief\nHealth Inspector Daryl Spencer, the Vector Control Unit at CBH has increased\nthe number of inspections carried out by the unit.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The unit has also increased\nits fogging operations throughout the various communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a number of\nEnvironment Health Aids who visit the community on a daily basis, check\npremises for water-holding containers\nlike drums, tanks, and plants. Additionally, we check for tires and bulk waste\nsuch as refrigerators and washing machines. \u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the chemical control by fogging and the educational\ncampaign, the unit has also implemented a new initiative where fish are being\nplaced in water storage containers once the water is not used for drinking\npurposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Spencer noted that this\nmethod has been proven to work as the fish scavenge on the larvae before it\ngets to the stage of becoming a mosquito. He explained that the mosquito is the\nmost dangerous animal to have ever survived. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know some people may say\nthat it is not an animal. But it has killed more people in all the wars in the\nentire world combined. It is not something to take lightly. In the past four\nyears we have had the fight against Chikungunya, Zika and Dengue fever, but\nwhat it should be is the flight against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Spencer noted that every\ncitizen and resident can play a major role in eradicating the Aedes Aegypti\nmosquito from Antigua and Barbuda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the measures that\nhomeowners can take are to remove stagnant water,  properly cover tanks, cisterns, and drums, pick up litter, clean clogged rain\ngutters, drain or throw old tires, get rid of junk, change vases every three to\nfour days, and keep the grass low.<\/p>\n
