Pompey Suggests Family May Appeal to Governor General for Reprieve in Mongoose Gun Case<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Commissioner of Police and columnist Rawlston Pompey has suggested that the family of convicted tattoo artist Kelvin \u201cMongoose\u201d Russell<\/a><\/strong> may wish to appeal to the Governor General for a reprieve, following the influencer\u2019s sentencing on firearm charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russell<\/a><\/strong>, who pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm, ammunition, and a silencing accessory, was sentenced to a total of 3 and a half years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel handed down the sentence on Wednesday after police discovered a Glock 80 pistol with ten rounds and a suppressor at his Lightfoot residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In two comments published online, Pompey pointed to the option of clemency, writing: \u201cFamily may appeal to His Majesty\u2019s Prison Governor General for a reprieve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pompey noted that although Russell showed remorse, had no previous convictions, was gainfully employed, and had dependents, these mitigating factors were seemingly not enough to persuade the sentencing magistrate to exercise leniency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, my neighbour \u2018Mongoose\u2019 seemed to have been darn unlucky,\u201d Pompey wrote. \u201cSubmitting and subjecting himself to the court\u2019s mercy\u2026 no antecedents\u2026 talented and skilful\u2026 a dependent mother and two little ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He criticised what he saw as an imbalance in the justice system, referencing the Probation of Offenders Act<\/em> and questioning whether adjudicators are making full use of its provisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also raised concerns about selective law enforcement, suggesting that certain communities may be treated more harshly than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pompey ended his remarks with a message of support for Russell\u2019s family, stating, \u201cEmpathy to Mongoose and his neighbourly family\u2026 Walk good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russell is currently serving his sentence at His Majesty\u2019s Prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
