St. John\u2019s Antigua \u2013 24 April 2025<\/em> – The Antigua and Barbuda Workers\u2019 Union is deeply saddened by the passing of Hilson \u201cBrother B\u201d Baptiste\u2014a devoted supporter, esteemed ally, and long-standing friend of the Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His transition marks the end of a nearly 40-year relationship with our organization, characterized by unwavering dedication, meaningful service, and steadfast solidarity.<\/p>

In addition to his distinguished tenure as a Member of Parliament and Minister of Agriculture in the United Progressive Party Administration, Bro. Baptiste was a beloved culinary enthusiast and celebrated restaurateur. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite the demands of his professional life, he remained deeply committed to the advancement of the Union\u2019s members\u2014particularly women\u2014through skills development and empowerment initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among his most impactful contributions was his role as lead instructor in the Union\u2019s pioneering Culinary Classes, organized by the Union\u2019s Women\u2019s Council. <\/p>

This flagship course was one of the first of its kind, providing women with marketable culinary skills that opened doors to employment and entrepreneurship at a time when opportunities in the wider professional world were limited. Bro. Baptiste\u2019s expert instruction, tireless dedication, and generous spirit helped lay a strong foundation for economic empowerment and independence for many Union members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers\u2019 Union extends its profound condolences to his wife, Ethlaine, his children and siblings. In particular, we express our deepest sympathies to his dear nephew, our Deputy General Secretary, Bro. Chester Hughes, who was first introduced to the Union by Bro. Baptiste over 30 years ago.<\/p>
