Antigua and Barbuda: US Tariffs Threaten Utility Subsidies for Elderly and Disabled<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A newly announced 25% tariff by former US President Donald Trump on nations purchasing oil and gas from Venezuela is raising concern in Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong>, where thousands of vulnerable citizens rely on social programs funded by PetroCaribe.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Senior Citizens Utility Subsidy Programme, which distributes over EC$1 million monthly, helps more than 7,000 elderly and disabled residents pay for electricity, cooking gas, and basic necessities. Officials fear the tariff could destabilise PetroCaribe\u2019s operations and disrupt this critical lifeline.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bernard Warner, head of the Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> Association for Persons with Disabilities, warned that over 700 disabled individuals could be directly affected. \u201cMany of our members rely on that EC$215 per month for gas and light bills,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf our government can\u2019t meet obligations under PetroCaribe, the ripple effect will hit hard\u2014not just our members, but their families too.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Warner urged people with disabilities to begin considering entrepreneurship. \u201cSell vegetables, coconuts, sweeties\u2014anything. Start small and create your own income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must build resilience.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Other residents shared similar fears, pointing to already difficult conditions made worse by the potential loss of assistance. \u201cIt\u2019s unfair,\u201d said one woman.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just about money\u2014it\u2019s about food, medication, toiletries, and our health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has not yet announced a contingency plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, with over 7,000 relying on monthly support, there is growing pressure to safeguard these essential subsidies from geopolitical fallout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
