Weston: ABLP Solved Crises Others Said Were Impossible<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Minister Lennox Weston has defended the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party\u2019s (ABLP<\/a><\/strong>) record in government, crediting the administration with steering the country through multiple national crises that others believed could not be overcome.<\/p>

Speaking at an ABLP political rally on Thursday night, Weston said the party had delivered results in moments of severe economic instability, including the near-collapse of the banking sector and the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we entered office, we were facing a financial disaster,\u201d Weston told supporters. \u201cThe banks were on the brink, people\u2019s savings were at risk, and international experts said it could not be fixed without bankrupting the country. But we proved them wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled that global financial advisers had warned against government efforts to acquire and stabilise local banks, suggesting the country lacked the resources. \u201cThey said we didn\u2019t have the money to buy the banks\u2014we did it anyway, and we kept them afloat,\u201d Weston said.<\/p>

Weston also pointed to the government\u2019s handling of the COVID-19 crisis, asserting that the ABLP\u2019s <\/a><\/strong>response helped protect livelihoods and ensured economic recovery. \u201cThey said we were finished when the pandemic hit,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we navigated it, we kept the economy alive, and we emerged stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Framing the party\u2019s approach as pragmatic and innovative, Weston said the ABLP had consistently defied expectations by relying on \u201cnon-traditional\u201d strategies rather than conventional economic prescriptions.<\/p>

\u201cWe didn\u2019t follow the standard playbook because it wasn\u2019t written for countries like ours,\u201d he said. \u201cWe used intelligence, creativity, and courage\u2014and that\u2019s what leadership looks like.\u201d<\/p>

Weston urged voters to recognise the track record of resilience and results, warning against what he described as unproven and unstable alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
