St John\u2019s City East MP Melford Nicholas has accused the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) of spreading misinformation in a bid to destabilise public confidence, warning supporters not to be misled by what he described as a campaign of \u201clies and innuendo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at an Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) rally on Friday night, Nicholas said the government had \u201cnothing to hide,\u201d referencing Prime Minister Gaston Browne\u2019s recent national television appearance alongside government professionals to address public concerns about a controversial transaction.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI watched online and I\u2019m surprised that Sir Lester Medical Center and the emergency medical services were not overwhelmed last night,\u201d Nicholas said, referring to what he claimed was the opposition\u2019s visible disappointment that the Prime Minister had addressed the issue without faltering.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were hoping the Prime Minister would stumble. Instead, what they saw was a demonstration of leadership and full transparency,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MP claimed that the opposition\u2019s strategy now hinges on \u201copportunistic\u201d attempts to \u201cfund the discourse in this country about lies and innuendo,\u201d as they face internal leadership struggles.<\/p>

Nicholas also took aim at what he characterised as the UPP\u2019s lack of credible leadership. \u201cThey can\u2019t find a leadership that is competent and credible to present themselves to the public as an alternative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged Labour Party supporters to remain unified and vigilant, warning that low turnout in the last general election nearly cost them crucial victories.<\/p>

\u201cSome of our comrades, for whatever reason, stayed home. We cannot let that happen again,\u201d Nicholas said. \u201cWe have nothing to be ashamed of. We have performed, and we have led with integrity and openness.\u201d<\/p>

The remarks formed part of a broader speech in which Nicholas championed the ABLP\u2019s governance record, including economic recovery, infrastructure improvements, and social programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UPP has yet to respond to Nicholas\u2019s statements.<\/p>\n
