Weston Warns of \u2018Forces Gathered to Topple the Labour Party\u2019<\/strong><\/p>

Former Minister Lennox Weston has warned that the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) is facing a broad and coordinated attempt to destabilise the government, involving international actors, wealthy foreign interests, and the domestic opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a political rally on Thursday night, Weston said the party was not simply contending with the United Progressive Party (UPP), but also with what he described as a wider geopolitical threat.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have found ourselves at a place where powerful forces have gathered\u2014some with billions, others with influence in Washington\u2014to bring this government down,\u201d Weston told party supporters.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He alleged that a billionaire with ties to the Russian oligarchy, along with foreign governments and the UPP, were engaged in a calculated effort to discredit Prime Minister Gaston Browne and fracture the ABLP\u2019s support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut Gaston Browne is not the problem,\u201d he said. \u201cThe problem is the indomitable spirit of the working class of Antigua and Barbuda. You take one of us down, and 20 more will rise.\u201d<\/p>

Weston defended the ABLP\u2019s record in office, crediting the party\u2019s leadership with steering the country through multiple economic crises, including the collapse of major financial institutions and the COVID-19 pandemic. He argued that the Labour Party had consistently delivered creative and pragmatic solutions where others had predicted failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not about one man\u2014it\u2019s about our sovereignty and the right of small states to govern themselves without foreign interference,\u201d he said.<\/p>

He further cautioned against what he called \u201cthe politics of deception,\u201d criticising the opposition\u2019s alleged reliance on external funding and unqualified leadership. \u201cThey are asking you to sell the soul of your country,\u201d Weston said, referencing foreign donors and the elevation of opposition figures he claimed lacked the literacy and skills to govern effectively.<\/p>

In a broader warning, Weston suggested that upcoming changes in global leadership\u2014particularly in the United States\u2014could pose additional challenges for small island states. He urged voters to stand firm, resist outside pressure, and defend the nation\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe era ahead will test our resolve,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the Labour Party has always been about defending the people\u2019s interests\u2014and with your support, we will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
