(AFP)\u2014 China will impose 84 per cent tariffs on US imports, up from 34 per cent, the finance ministry said Wednesday, hours after similar levies by the United States came into force.<\/p>

US President Donald Trump\u2019s latest salvo of tariffs came into effect on dozens of trading partners Wednesday, including punishing 104 per cent duties on imports of Chinese products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beijing has consistently opposed tariff rises and said Wednesday it would take \u201cfirm and forceful\u201d steps to protect its interests.<\/p>

Its finance ministry later said in a statement that \u201cadditional tariff rates\u201d on imports originating in the United States would \u201crise from 34 per cent to 84 per cent\u201d, effective from 12:01 pm on Thursday.<\/p>

\u201cThe tariff escalation against China by the United States simply piles mistakes on top of mistakes (and) severely infringes on China\u2019s legitimate rights and interests,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington\u2019s moves \u201cseverely damage the multilateral rules-based trade system\u201d, it added.<\/p>

In a separate statement, Beijing\u2019s commerce ministry said it would blacklist six American artificial intelligence firms, including Shield AI Inc. and Sierra Nevada Corp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The companies had either sold arms to Taiwan or collaborated on \u201cmilitary technology\u201d with the island, the commerce ministry said.<\/p>
