Shortage of Construction Workers as Antigua Booms, Says PM<\/strong><\/p>

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda is facing a labor shortage as a result of rapid economic growth and increased construction activity driven by foreign investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a shortage of employment in a number of sectors\u2014the hotel sector, the construction sector. We are actually importing construction workers now because we can\u2019t find enough skilled labor.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Browne noted the scope of upcoming developments and said the labor force is struggling to keep pace.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem we have now is labor, in terms of the physical labor to build out these projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed to the national housing programme as one area directly affected.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven national housing\u2014the housing construction has come to a screeching halt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister disclosed that the government is already in discussions to bring in foreign workers to fill the gap.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are likely to get in some workers, probably from the Dominican Republic. I know that Senator Rawdon is currently negotiating with the ambassador to the Dominican Republic to get some workers.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that the influx of foreign labor is necessary to maintain momentum across the country\u2019s development projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t recall at any point in the history of Antigua and Barbuda that we had to deliberately allow for the importation of foreign workers like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Browne, the labor shortage is a direct consequence of the success of his administration\u2019s investment-driven strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have attracted significant investments that can take us for at least another five years\u2026 Things are really looking up.\u201d<\/p>\n
