A senior official of the Methodist Church here has expressed concern at what he termed \u201cmoney making\u201d churches that have appeared in St. Lucia virtually overnight.<\/p>

\u201cI am very concerned. Nowadays we are making the church into a business entity,\u201d said Seth Ampadu, the Superintendent Minister of the Methodist Church here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said many people were playing on the vulnerability of others by appointing themselves apostles, doctors and prophets.<\/p>

\u201cThese people are scamming them, taking money from them,\u201d Ampadu said, noting \u201cthere are so many churches springing up, all because they see the church as a place where they can make money.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are using the church as a money making machine to make themselves rich,\u201d the clergyman said, without going into details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ampadu said it was time that the authorities regulate those churches, otherwise the \u2018so called pastors\u2019 will use the people and take their money without paying taxes to the government.<\/p>

\u201cThis is very serious,\u201d he said, adding \u201cyou ask yourself \u2018how much do they pay to the government? Do they have schools? Do they have hospitals and other things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere do they keep their money? What do they use their money for?\u2019 These are some of the things I feel the government should investigate.<\/p>

\u201cI think the church is there to meet the social and spiritual needs of the people. The church has to give, not take. But it seems today that they are doing the opposite \u2013 exploiting the people and it is very bad,\u201d the Methodist Church official said,<\/p>
