<a href=\"https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/pm-browne-calls-for-greater-regional-cooperation-to-counter-u-s-trade-policies\/\">U.S. tariffs<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/listen-pm-says-us-tariffs-on-chinese-ships-could-hurt-the-entire-region\/\">Chinese-operated shipping lines<\/a> could have devastating effects on Caribbean economies, potentially pushing regional inflation as high as 14%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during his Pointe FM radio show, Browne explained that the policy\u2014currently under discussion in Washington\u2014would impose a fee of approximately $1. 5 million on all <a href=\"https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/darwin-telemaque-highlights-need-for-intra-regional-logistic-partnerships-to-boost-caribbean-trade\/\">container ships<\/a> operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/chinese-funded-housing-project-on-track-for-on-time-completion\/\">Chinese lines<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve been advised that a container could increase by about $3,000 to $4,000 USD each,\u201d he said. \u201cThat could drive prices up by 8 to 10 percent easily, at a time when inflation is already elevated.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"antig-3961787459\" \u201cIt will literally destabilize Caribbean economies,\u201d he said, citing analyses that suggest inflation could trend up to 12 to 14 percent if the measure is implemented.<\/p><div expected to write to U.S. President  requesting a carve-out for the Caribbean under the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the objectives of the CBI is to ensure economic and social stability within the region,\u201d Browne said. \u201cThe United States should be concerned about its third border and any unintended consequences of policies it implements.\u201d<\/p><div South American nations such as Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Browne cautioned that discussions on alternatives remain premature. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to resolve this issue so we can maintain the
