The government of Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong> has allocated US$1 million<\/strong> through the Medical Benefits Scheme<\/strong> to ensure the country is not left vulnerable during future pandemics or disease outbreaks, a lesson drawn from the global scramble for vaccines during COVID-19.<\/p>

Chief of Staff Ambassador Lionel Hurst<\/strong> announced the measure during Thursday\u2019s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing<\/strong>, stating that the government is determined to avoid the delays, uncertainty, and reliance on donations<\/strong> that characterised the last public health emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is being done so that Antigua and Barbuda can respond swiftly and independently when the next outbreak or pandemic arises,\u201d Hurst explained. \u201cWe may not be able to count on external aid or donations next time, and we don\u2019t want to be caught off guard.\u201d<\/p>

During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, many small island developing states, including Antigua and Barbuda, struggled to access vaccines as wealthier nations secured large supplies. In some cases, doses arrived weeks or months later<\/strong> than needed, hampering national responses.<\/p>

Officials say this reserve fund will ensure the government can immediately purchase vaccines<\/strong> for the population, rather than waiting in line for global distribution or relying on uncertain diplomatic arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the allocation represents a national safeguard<\/strong>, Hurst clarified that Antigua and Barbuda remains committed to working with regional partners<\/strong> such as CARPHA<\/strong> and PAHO<\/strong> on vaccine procurement.<\/p>

\u201cThis doesn\u2019t replace regional coordination,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it gives us the flexibility to act fast if the regional or international response is delayed, or if we are required to contribute financially upfront.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government also highlighted past success with joint procurement mechanisms<\/strong> through the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), which allows countries to negotiate better prices<\/strong> by pooling demand.<\/p>

The US$1 million will remain set aside and ready to deploy, with government officials indicating it could also support the purchase of other essential medical supplies if needed during a future emergency.<\/p>\n
