The UWI Five Islands<\/strong><\/a> Campus is set to enter a new phase of regional integration and financial support, as Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles announced that all contributing territories of the University of the West Indies (UWI) will begin jointly funding the campus from 2025 onward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement came during the campus\u2019s annual Council meeting, where Sir Hilary praised the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda for carrying the full operational cost of the campus over its first five years.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFive Islands<\/a><\/strong> has completed its apprenticeship,\u201d Beckles said. \u201cIt now stands alongside Mona, Cave Hill, and St. Augustine as a fully integrated campus supported by the entire UWI family.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The shift in funding means countries such as Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and other UWI-contributing governments will begin contributing to Five Islands based on the standard formula\u2014taking into account the number of enrolled students from each territory and a share of the campus\u2019s overall operating cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This move solidifies the Five Islands Campus as a true OECS institution, serving the entire sub-region and beyond. Since opening in 2019, the campus has grown from 176 students to more than 1,100 and offers over 30 undergraduate and graduate programmes in areas such as nursing, criminology, public health, artificial intelligence, and education.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Beckles said Five Islands represents the realisation of a decades-long vision: \u201cPrincess Alice, UWI\u2019s first Chancellor, said the university should spread like a warm blanket across the Caribbean. With Five Islands now fully embraced by the region, that vision is complete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition to regional funding reflects the growing confidence in the campus\u2019s relevance and success, with OECS territories already sending increasing numbers of students. For example, Dominica is currently the second-largest source of non-Antiguan students at the campus.<\/p>

Campus officials say the change will not only help with long-term financial stability but also deepen partnerships across the region.<\/p>

\u201cWe\u2019re now truly an OECS institution, supported by and serving all its member states,\u201d said Principal Professor Justin Robinson. \u201cThis is a significant step in securing our future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
