Antigua Observer<\/strong>– A 31-year-old resident of Pigotts Village who was found with a modified flare gun <\/a><\/strong>will spend 18 months at His Majesty\u2019s Prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of the weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeffers Jno-Baptiste appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason in St John\u2019s Magistrates\u2019 Court and also pleaded guilty to possession of one .40 round of ammunition and being armed with an offensive weapon \u2013 a black and silver knife.<\/p>

On March 8, police officers, acting on information, went to the Stables nightclub where they saw a white Honda Fit parked on the southern side of the nightclub.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

At that time, Jno-Baptiste was not inside the car but another man, also from Pigotts Village, was sitting inside the vehicle. As he saw the officers approaching, he threw something from a small shoulder bag outside of the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police immediately detained him, and the vehicle was searched, leading to the discovery of the modified flare gun<\/a><\/strong> and the ammunition by the lower dashboard panel.<\/p>

The man told the police, \u201cA one gun. A me partner gun\u201d, when questioned about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers later saw Jno-Baptiste on the western side of the nightclub and he initially denied knowing anything about the illegal weapon.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMe know nothing about that, officer,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

When officers searched him, they found the knife in his right back pocket. He was taken into custody and arrested and charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Housing employee who was sentenced to 18 months on the firearm possession charge, told the court that he found the weapon in Paynters West while doing some work in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jno-Baptiste said he decided to keep the modified flare gun and not turn it over to the police because his life had been threatened in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the court gave the 31-year-old man a one-third discount for previously good behaviour, he was also sentenced to three months for the possession of ammunition and the same time for being armed with the knife. The sentences are to run concurrently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weapon and ammo were confiscated and ordered to be turned over to the police armory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
