Roseau, Dominica <\/strong>\u2013 The IFECASA IWD25 Women in Service Retreat <\/strong>concluded on Sunday,  March 9th, after three days of transformative discussions, professional development, and  cultural exchange. This landmark event, the first of its kind in the region, gathered women  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

from across the Caribbean who serve in fire, risk, disaster, and emergency response fields to  celebrate their achievements, build professional networks, and advance gender equality in  service industries. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Among the distinguished attendees were three officers from Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0 Inspector of Police Evette Henry, Corporal Janet Jackson, and Constable Tedra Prophet<\/strong>,\u00a0 who participated in the retreat with the support of their Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Vivian\u00a0 Parker<\/strong>. Their presence underscored the commitment of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> protective\u00a0 services to fostering gender equity and professional development in emergency response.\u00a0 Each officer was awarded an IFECASA Certificate of Participation<\/strong>, acknowledging their\u00a0 completion of 29 hours of IFE CPD (Continuing Professional Development) credits<\/strong>.<\/p>

The retreat opened with a Welcome Address from IFECASA  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary, Jenelle Ross-Mc Intyre, and CFO Wayne Letang <\/strong>of  <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

the Dominica Fire and Ambulance Service. Both speakers emphasized the historic nature of  this event <\/strong>and its importance in fostering a unified approach to capacity building <\/strong>across the  region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Keynote Speech <\/strong>was delivered by Her Excellency, President Sylvanie Burton of  Dominica<\/strong>, who highlighted the significance of her patronage as the first female President  and the first Head of State of indigenous descent<\/strong>. As a former Permanent Secretary for  Gender Affairs<\/strong>, she reinforced the strides being made by Dominica in alignment with SDG  Goal 5: Gender Equality<\/strong>, citing the increasing presence of women in leadership across the  public sector. <\/p>

Professional Development and Knowledge Sharing <\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Participants engaged in dynamic CPD sessions <\/strong>throughout the retreat, including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2219 Assistant Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade<\/strong>, who spoke on “The  Fundamentals of Being a Career Woman”<\/strong>, particularly in male-dominated fields  such as fire and emergency response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2219 Director of Gender Affairs, Mr. Lester Guy<\/strong>, who discussed the evolving gender  landscape <\/strong>across the Caribbean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2219 Vice Chair of IFECASA and EMS Expert, Ms. Amaly St. Cyr<\/strong>, who led a session on the  psychosocial needs of women in protective and emergency services <\/strong>and strategies  for resilience and professional success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giving Back to the Community on International Women\u2019s Day <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 8th, International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong>, the attendees came together for a community  outreach initiative<\/strong>, donating vouchers to the Ministry of Gender Affairs <\/strong>to support single  mothers affected by domestic violence. They also visited the local infirmary<\/strong>, providing care  and companionship to elderly women, reinforcing the ethos of service beyond their  professional roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An open panel discussion <\/strong>followed, chaired by Chaguanas Borough Councillor, Mrs. Stacey  Murphy <\/strong>from Trinidad. The discussion featured the Permanent Secretary of the Dominica  Ministry of National Security<\/strong>, who emphasized the importance of understanding  governance structures <\/strong>within which service professionals operate and the avenues available  for support and development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honouring Trailblazers in Service <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retreat honoured local female leaders, including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2219 Her Excellency, President Sylvanie Burton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Annette Sanford delivered a powerful message <\/strong>on breaking barriers <\/strong>for indigenous  women and overcoming historical burdens, urging attendees to be tenacious in pursuit of  leadership roles<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Cultural and Inspirational Conclusion <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final day of the retreat featured a visit to the Kalinago Territory<\/strong>, arranged by Discover  Dominica Authority<\/strong>, one of the event\u2019s key sponsors. Attendees immersed themselves in  the rich culture of Dominica\u2019s indigenous people, reinforcing the event\u2019s theme of heritage,  leadership, and empowerment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closing ceremony on Sunday included remarks by IFECASA Vice Chair, Ms. Amaly St.  Cyr<\/strong>, followed by a Vote of Thanks from IFECASA Community Lead, Ms. Arvolon Wilson Smith<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IFECASA\u2019s Commitment to Professional Growth <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IFECASA remains dedicated to empowering professionals in fire, risk, disaster, and  emergency response <\/strong>across the Caribbean. Through initiatives like this retreat, IFECASA  continues to create opportunities for standardized skills development, professional  certification, and regional collaboration<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
