The Ministry of the Environment continues the course of implementing the Polystyrene Styrofoam ban.<\/p>

This has led to numerous\nconsultations with business owners who are affected by the recent developments\nincluding Lobster Farmers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lobster Farmers met with minister<\/g> Molwyn Joseph along with Environment Implementation Coordinator, Indira James-Henry on Thursday 20th<\/sup> December,<\/g> 2018 in the Ministry\u2019s Conference Room.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry has decided to\ngive an extension on the use of Styrofoam Coolers to Lobster Farmers who export\ntheir products as a result of discussions held with representatives from the\nFisheries Division, Fresh Catch, Lil Lincs, Lincoln Farms, Ocean Kingdom, CRP,\nIndies Greens and Shell Beach Corporation.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During the consultation, the\nfarmers were asked by Minister Joseph what challenges they will face as a\nresult of the ban on the Styrofoam Coolers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lobster Farmers indicated\nthat their concerns were regulations set by airlines regarding the type of\ncontainer the lobster is exported in and if the alternative option will be\naccepted by the airlines. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The other concern was the cost\nof the alternative options and its durability through the long hours of travel.\nThe lobsters are exported as far as Europe, Hong Kong and China, sometimes for 34\nhours.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister\nJoseph, in response, indicated his willingness to work with the lobster farmers\nso that their trade is not interrupted.   He has given a 6 month extension, until June\n30 for them to transition to more eco-friendly products. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, the Fisheries Division will be responsible for purchasing the\nStyrofoam coolers while establishing an identification system.  This will ensure that all coolers are\naccounted for at all times, reducing circulation in the local market.  <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They\nhave also agreed to use standardized sizes of boxes as another way of\naccountability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environment\nImplementation Coordinator, Indira James-Henry indicated to the farmers that a suitable\nsustainable alternative has been identified in line with the Ministry\u2019s\ninitiative. Green Cell Foam is made from corn. It is compostable and\nbiodegradable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, the Lobster farmers will be able to boast of green packaging while\npromoting their product which in turn can influence more customers to support\nthe green initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This extension is only for lobster farmers who are exporting their products.\u00a0 These Styrofoam coolers are not to be purchased, distributed or used in Antigua and Barbuda. Anyone found in contempt will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. <\/p>\n
