PM Browne Suggests Opposition MPs Seek Land to Fund Breakaway Party<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> has suggested that opposition MPs Kelvin \u201cShugy\u201d Simon, Algernon \u201cSerpent\u201d Watts, and Richard Lewis<\/strong> are attempting to break away from the United Progressive Party (UPP) and form their own political entity<\/strong>\u2014a move he believes is tied to their recent request for concessionary land<\/strong> in Deep Bay Heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApparently, they want to make a move and start a new party,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cAnd to leave the UPP, they need money. If all three of them could get a box-hand, get land worth about $2 million each, that would probably help them make the plunge.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

The government has denied the MPs\u2019 bid for land in Deep Bay Heights<\/strong>, a prime location reserved for high-end tourism development<\/strong>. The area, valued at US$20 per square foot<\/strong>, has been set aside for potential investment by Sunwing<\/strong>, the operator of Royalton Antigua Resort.<\/p>

Gaston Browne<\/strong><\/a> revealed that Simon, Watts, and Lewis submitted formal requests to purchase one acre each at a heavily discounted rate of just US$1.50 per square foot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey wanted to pay about $200,000 for land worth over $2 million,\u201d<\/strong> Browne stated. \u201cAnd they want us to take the land from Sunwing and sell it to them personally.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

Browne questioned why the opposition MPs were seeking land in such a prime area rather than other government-allocated spaces<\/strong>. He suggested that their actions point to a personal financial strategy rather than genuine public service<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey did not even go to an area where land has been sold for maybe $5 a square foot,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cThey went straight for the most valuable land, which tells you what their real motivation is.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

He indicated that this move aligns with rumors of internal divisions within the UPP<\/strong>, with Simon, Watts, and Lewis allegedly positioning themselves for a political shift<\/strong>.<\/p>

Browne further criticized the MPs for their lack of engagement in parliamentary proceedings<\/strong> while pursuing personal benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNeither Shugy nor Serpent has spoken more than three times in Parliament,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cAnd on each occasion, they have not spoken for more than five minutes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also pointed to Simon\u2019s absence from Parliament to attend Trinidad\u2019s Carnival<\/strong>, saying it exemplified a disregard for public duty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe not only absented himself but when confronted, he literally cursed out the Parliament,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cThis guy doesn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite his criticisms, Browne confirmed that the government has approved land for the opposition MPs<\/strong>\u2014just not in Deep Bay Heights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Cabinet agreed that we would sell them land at a concession rate because we\u2019re not trying to deprive them of the opportunity,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cBut where they went and what they were trying to achieve was something else.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
