Government Approves Concession Land\u2014But Not at Deep Bay Heights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite his criticisms, Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> confirmed that the government has approved land for opposition MPs<\/strong> at a concession rate, but not in the high-value Deep Bay Heights area<\/strong> they originally sought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Cabinet agreed that we would sell them land at a concession rate<\/strong> because we\u2019re not trying to deprive them of the opportunity,\u201d Browne said. \u201cBut where they went and what they were trying to achieve was something else<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>

Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> alleged that three United Progressive Party (UPP) MPs\u2014Kelvin “Shugy” Simon, Algernon “Serpent” Watts, and Richard Lewis<\/strong>\u2014each formally requested one acre<\/strong> of land at Deep Bay Heights, a prime government-owned development area<\/strong> earmarked for high-end tourism.<\/p>

\u201cThese individuals requested land that is valued at about $2 million EC<\/strong> each, and they wanted to pay about $200,000 EC<\/strong>\u2014a fraction of its true worth,\u201d Browne stated. \u201cWe have agreements with Sunwing<\/strong> to develop that area, and these individuals want us to take the land from Sunwing and sell it to them personally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne accused the opposition MPs of engaging in self-enrichment<\/strong>, despite their frequent public criticism of his administration.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t go to an area where land sells for $5 per square foot<\/strong>. They went after land we reserved for high-end villas and resort developments<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A letter titled \u201cEvil is What Evil Does,\u201d<\/em> criticized the MPs for attempting to acquire land at a steeply discounted rate<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201cThe trio was recently spotted surveying land in Deep Bay Heights<\/strong> before formally petitioning the Minister of Lands, Hon. Anthony Smith, requesting the sale of at least one acre each at significantly discounted rates,\u201d the statement read. \u201cWhile the market value of land in this area exceeds $20 USD per square foot<\/strong>, these MPs sought to acquire it for $1.50 USD per square foot<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>

Browne further suggested that their land requests may have been financially motivated<\/strong> in anticipation of an attempt to break away from the UPP and form a new political entity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is said that these three are laying the groundwork for a breakaway political entity<\/strong>, an endeavor that has until recently been met with hesitation from MP Watts,\u201d the government\u2019s statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne also used the opportunity to criticize the MPs\u2019 performance in Parliament<\/strong>, arguing that they have failed to represent their constituents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShugy and Serpent have not spoken for more than 10 minutes total<\/strong> in the two years they\u2019ve been in Parliament,\u201d he said. \u201cThey show up in the morning, then disappear by lunchtime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further claimed that Shugy Simon has not participated in a single budget debate<\/strong> since entering Parliament and had even skipped a parliamentary session to attend Trinidad\u2019s Carnival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are quick to criticize the government but slow to do the work,\u201d Browne said. \u201cNot once have they written letters on behalf of their constituents to get land\u2014but they wrote for themselves.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While he was critical of their actions, Browne reiterated that the government maintains a policy<\/strong> of offering MPs concessionary land<\/strong>, particularly those who have served multiple terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe issue here is not about whether MPs should get concession land. It\u2019s about where they wanted it and the intent behind it<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
