PM Browne: Government to Take Over Unreliable Garbage Collection Services<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The government of Antigua and Barbuda<\/a> is moving to take greater control of waste management<\/strong>, following persistent complaints about unreliable private garbage collection services. Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the purchase of 10 new garbage trucks<\/strong>, emphasizing the need for improved efficiency and reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem we have with most of our garbage collectors is that they do not invest in reliable equipment,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cMany of them have been gaming the system, sending in bills knowing that their trucks have not worked, aided and abetted by certain public officials.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

He explained that many private contractors purchase old, second-hand trucks from New York and Miami<\/strong>, which frequently break down, leading to piles of uncollected garbage<\/strong>.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomething as basic as garbage collection, and the government is being blamed for failures caused by private operators,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had to intervene because these contractors charge a premium while submitting bogus bills.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government\u2019s solution<\/strong> is to bring a significant portion of waste collection under state control<\/strong>, using the newly acquired trucks to ensure more dependable service.<\/p>

\u201cClearly, some of these individuals in multiple trucks are going to be relieved of their contracts,\u201d<\/strong> Browne stated. \u201cThose with reliable services may continue, but those who have been gaming the system will be discontinued.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also noted that while privatization has been in place for over 30 years<\/strong>, the lack of oversight and failure of some operators to invest in modern equipment<\/strong> has led to serious inefficiencies.<\/p>

With the new fleet of garbage trucks<\/strong>, the government aims to stabilize waste collection services<\/strong> and ensure cleaner communities<\/strong> across Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>
