St. Mary\u2019s South MP Kelvin \u201cShugy\u201d Simon<\/a><\/strong> has shown no remorse<\/strong> for skipping a parliamentary session to attend Trinidad Carnival<\/strong>, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/strong>, who criticized the MP\u2019s attitude and lack of engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen he was challenged by several individuals, he literally said to them, \u2018to hell with Parliament,\u2019\u201d Browne stated<\/strong>.<\/p>

The Prime Minister also pointed out Simon\u2019s dismissive attitude toward those who questioned his absence. <\/p>

\u201cI saw a post on Facebook, and I\u2019m paraphrasing, in which he was asking us if we\u2019re jealous, if we wanted him to take us to Trinidad too,\u201d Browne said<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne noted that MP Kelvin \u201cShugy\u201d Simon<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> had not debated a single budget<\/strong> since taking office and that his parliamentary contributions were minimal. \u201cBetween himself and Serpent, in the two-year period, they have not\u2014I\u2019m not exaggerating\u2014they have not spoken for more than ten minutes with all the speeches consolidated. Not ten minutes,\u201d Browne said<\/strong>.<\/p>

Senator Lamine Newton<\/strong> also weighed in, stating that Simon had ignored key opportunities to challenge the government<\/strong>. \u201cThis is something that they could run with. There are so many avenues they could challenge government, but instead, Shugy decided he would not,\u201d Newton said<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne further criticized Simon\u2019s approach to his parliamentary duties, emphasizing the salary he continues to receive. \u201cEven if they don\u2019t show up in Parliament, they get that money in their account every month\u2014over 8,000 a month<\/strong>,\u201d Browne said<\/strong>.<\/p>

The controversy comes amid Simon\u2019s request for concessionary land<\/strong>, a move that Browne found concerning given his lack of participation in Parliament<\/strong>. \u201cI want to know if someone with such a dismal performance is really deserving of such a concession,\u201d Browne said<\/strong>.<\/p>
