Antigua and Barbuda<\/a>\u2019s Construction Boom Driving Increased Demand for Cement, MP Turner Says<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

MP Rawdon Turner has highlighted a surge in construction activity across Antigua and Barbuda<\/a>, leading to supply challenges in cement.<\/strong> Speaking in Parliament last week, Turner noted that demand is exceeding supply<\/strong>, prompting plans to dredge Crabbs Peninsula to accommodate larger shipment vessels<\/strong>. <\/p>

\u201cConstruction in Antigua and Barbuda<\/a> is booming,\u201d<\/strong> Turner stated in Parliament. \u201cLast year alone, the sector contributed over $100 million to the economy. But with that growth comes challenges, and right now, the demand for cement is outstripping supply.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that the current cargo ships delivering cement are too small<\/strong>, forcing frequent shipments that often fail to meet market needs<\/strong>.<\/p>

To address the issue, the government has initiated a dredging project at Crabs<\/strong>, the key industrial port used for importing cement.<\/p>

\u201cWe are deepening the channel at Crabs to allow larger vessels to dock and unload bigger shipments,\u201d<\/strong> Turner said. \u201cThis will help stabilize supply and prevent frequent shortages.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He dismissed concerns about environmental damage<\/strong>, noting that the area has been dredged multiple times before<\/strong> and that the current work removes primarily bedrock and large stones, not seagrass or marine habitats<\/strong>.<\/p>
