The government of Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong><\/a><\/em> is moving to strengthen its litter enforcement efforts, with plans to deploy more litter wardens<\/em> and explore the use of CCTV cameras<\/em> to monitor illegal dumping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the Post-Cabinet Press Briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst<\/em> acknowledged that while litter wardens are already in place, their effectiveness has been questioned.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt present, we have about half a dozen<\/em> wardens, but the Minister has indicated that they may not have the vigor required to properly patrol and enforce the laws,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Authorities see an expanded warden program<\/em> as key to keeping the country clean, particularly given the importance of tourism to the local economy<\/em>. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A <\/strong>clean Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> is necessary if we are to attract repeat visitors, and maintaining a pristine environment benefits both residents and tourists,\u201d Hurst added.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

To strengthen enforcement, officials are also considering CCTV cameras<\/em> in high-dumping areas<\/em> to provide 24-hour surveillance. \u201cIt would be a combination of both [wardens and cameras]. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cameras would provide evidence, while wardens would be responsible for issuing tickets and taking enforcement action,\u201d Hurst explained.<\/p>

The government has not disclosed a timeline for the expansion<\/em> but maintains that tackling illegal dumping and littering<\/em> is a priority.<\/p>

Officials are urging the public to take personal responsibility<\/em> for waste disposal, warning that increased surveillance could lead to fines and penalties<\/em> for offenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
