UPP MPs Criticize Delayed Distribution of Bills Ahead of February 27 Sitting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of Parliament from the United Progressive Party (UPP) have raised concerns over the continued late distribution of bills by the Department of Legal Affairs, urging Attorney-General Sir Steadroy Benjamin to adhere to the Standing Orders of the House.<\/p>

Ahead of the rescheduled sitting on Thursday, February 27, MPs were only given hard copies of 12 out of the 13 bills listed on the Order Paper. The documents were delivered between Tuesday, February 25, and Wednesday, February 26, leaving little to no time for proper consultation with constituents or advisors.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The UPP members have expressed frustration, stating that this late distribution undermines their ability to adequately prepare and debate the bills in a manner that reflects the needs and concerns of their constituents. They described the ongoing delays as a “deliberate act” by the Attorney-General, with the backing of Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the Government Bench, who they argue have the advantage of prior knowledge and technical advice on the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MPs further criticized the frequent breaches of the notice period, calling it a practice that has persisted for far too long. In response, they are calling for an intervention from the Speaker of the House to ensure the public interest is protected and that democratic processes are upheld.<\/p>

In addition to their calls for intervention, the UPP MPs have encouraged the public to voice their dissatisfaction with what they see as a continued abuse of parliamentary procedure.
