The Antigua and Barbuda fishing community<\/a>, is, once again, prayerfully awaiting the return from sea the fishing<\/a> vessel \u201cMoya\u201d. The vessel left the Point Wharf on Friday 21st February with three dedicated souls onboard.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They were scheduled to return on Friday night but by daybreak Saturday had not returned to their berth. At present search and rescue operations are underway.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This is a sobering moment for many who depend on the sea for their livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a life fraught with danger and the possibility of life ending happenstance. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It only takes a second\u2026 A fisherman can face dangers such as: drowning from falling overboard, entanglement in fishing<\/a> gear, injuries from sharp hooks and knives, exposure to extreme weather conditions, and collisions with other vessels, particularly in crowded waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drowning is the most significant risk, as falling overboard can quickly lead to drowning if not properly equipped with life jackets or unable to be rescued quickly.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Entanglement in fishing gear, getting caught in nets, lines, or hooks can cause serious injuries or even drag a fisherman underwater leading to death by drowning. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Injuries can stem for complacent negligence but most often happen despite every contingency fashioned. Improper handling of tools and equipment can lead to life threatening circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the location, fishermen can face harsh conditions like heavy storms, extreme cold, or intense heat which can lead to hypothermia or heatstroke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In busy fishing areas, collisions with other boats can occur, especially in low visibility conditions or you might be traveling to your fishing ground in the best of weather with no vessels in sight and collide with a semi submerged container which has fell off a cargo ship near Africa and drifted all the way across the ocean only to rip out the bow of your vessel as you crest a wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rogue wave, a busted hull, a rope around a foot\u2026 you\u2019re lucky if it only cuts your foot off cause the option is to be dragged under and drowned if you can\u2019t get your foot out in seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try it\u2026 hold your breath\u2026 have someone throw three loops around your feet and pull on the rope you are tied to while you trying to free yourself\u2026.\u2026. See how long it takes you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
