Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> has confirmed that his proposal for a structured CARICOM-European Union<\/a> (EU) summit<\/strong> was accepted<\/strong> during the 48th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Barbados<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Pointe FM<\/strong>, Browne said the initiative would establish a formal engagement mechanism<\/strong> between Caribbean nations and the European Commission, ensuring more structured discussions on key issues affecting the region.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI also recommended that there should be a CARICOM-European summit. And she (President von der Leyen<\/em>) accepted. So it seems as though that in the future, we\u2019ll have an institutionalized forum to have more structured discussions with the European Union, rather than to have an ad hoc visit,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>

Browne noted that CARICOM\u2019s discussions with European officials focused on several critical areas<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debt relief and climate change financing<\/strong> for Small Island Developing States (SIDS)<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Economic partnership agreements (EPA) and trade relations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation in Haiti and regional security concerns<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Citizenship by investment (CBI) programs and compliance issues<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

On the matter of CBI programs<\/strong>, Browne acknowledged that European officials raised concerns about specific Caribbean nations<\/strong>, but said there was a recognition that better cooperation<\/strong> was needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe did say that they were concerned about a particular country that has violated and created some consternation for the Europeans. But otherwise, she understands the need for there to be better dialogue, greater cooperation, and collaboration between CARICOM and the European Union.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institutionalization of a CARICOM-EU summit<\/strong>, Browne said, would create an avenue for regular dialogue on trade, development assistance, and policy coordination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to have a structured mechanism for engagement. This summit will ensure that we are not just responding to issues when they arise, but proactively working on solutions in a way that benefits both CARICOM and the EU.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne said the summit would serve as an important platform for advancing regional priorities and fostering long-term cooperation<\/strong> between CARICOM and the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
