Antigua Offers to Share US$20M Subsea Cable with Neighbouring Islands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> is open to partnerships with neighbouring islands<\/strong> on its $20 million subsea cable project<\/strong>, which aims to enhance digital connectivity and reduce internet costs<\/strong> across the region.<\/p>

Speaking on Pointe FM<\/strong>, Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> said the government is willing to allow other Caribbean nations, including St. Kitts and Montserrat, to tap into the new cable at a reduced cost<\/strong>.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI recommended to the distinguished Prime Minister of St. Kitts, Prime Minister Drew, that perhaps their telecoms company should join us and they can get it for a fraction\u2026 If there\u2019s any other entity\u2014Montserrat, for example\u2014as we come down the island chain and they want to get a little tie-in, they can.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government-funded subsea cable<\/strong>, currently under development by the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA)<\/strong>, is expected to increase broadband capacity, lower costs, and improve internet speeds<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201cIf we rely on the private operators, on Digicel and Flow, recognizing their profit motives, then we will not be able to offer bandwidth at this speed,\u201d<\/em> Browne explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the project will allow households and businesses to access significantly faster internet at the same price<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201cIf you\u2019re paying, let\u2019s say, $200-something right now for your internet service, and you\u2019re getting 10 megawatts, we can give you 500 without charging $1 more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Browne said the investment in government-controlled telecom infrastructure<\/strong> will position Antigua and Barbuda as a leader in digital connectivity<\/strong> and support key industries such as artificial intelligence, online education, and business development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe capacity we have here, it is way beyond\u2026 In fact, we can\u2019t reach that capacity within 30, 40, 50 years, if ever.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subsea cable is expected to be completed within 18 months<\/strong>, with Antigua positioning itself as a regional hub for high-speed internet services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
