Concerns over Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s stray dog problem<\/strong> have resurfaced following negative reviews from tourists<\/strong> on platforms such as TripAdvisor<\/strong>, prompting renewed discussions about the enforcement of the Dog Control Act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Post-Cabinet press briefing<\/strong>, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst<\/strong> acknowledged that the lack of enforcement<\/strong> has contributed to a growing population of stray and unleashed dogs<\/strong>, which pose not only a nuisance but also a safety risk<\/strong>.<\/p>

“We do not enforce our Dog Control Act. But we don\u2019t really enforce either our Animal Cruelty Act,”<\/em> Hurst admitted.<\/p>

The issue has gained attention after tourists raised concerns<\/strong> about the high number of stray dogs<\/strong>, describing their presence as alarming in online travel reviews. Some visitors have expressed shock and dismay<\/strong> at seeing emaciated or injured animals<\/strong> roaming the streets, calling for stronger measures<\/strong> to address the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Hurst, Cabinet members were made aware of these concerns, and the responsible minister was instructed to take immediate action<\/strong>.<\/p>

“Yesterday, after Dr. Robbins told us this, the minister who was responsible was made aware that a stepped-up effort will be required. And so he promised the Cabinet that he would do just that and make a report in a week or two,”<\/em> Hurst said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animal welfare activists have long called for stronger regulations<\/strong> on pet ownership, including mandatory sterilization programs and stricter leash laws<\/strong>, to curb the growing stray population<\/strong>.
