Vehicle Licensing Fee Set to Increase by 40 Percent, Says Chief of Staff Hurst<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst has confirmed that the increase in vehicle licensing fees will be 40 percent across the board, not a flat $100 as previously mentioned.<\/p>

\u201cIt’s a 40% increase in vehicle licensing fees, a 40% increase in the registration fees,\u201d Hurst stated. \u201cSo if at the moment you pay $400, it will go to $560\u2014a 40% increase\u2014and it’s 40% across the board for everyone.\u201d<\/p>

He explained that the funds collected will be placed in a special account to repay a $100 million loan, which will be used to finance infrastructure projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey’re going to take this money that we’re going to put into a special fund, and they will use that money to repay a loan of about $100 million in the first instance. That will allow us to get a lot of work done at the same time,\u201d he said.<\/p>

Hurst also commented on the difficulties Barbudans face in securing bank loans for housing construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described the informal \u201cbox hand\u201d system, where individuals save money in increments to gradually purchase building materials. <\/p>

He contrasted this with the government’s intention to issue leases or ownership certificates, allowing Barbudans to access bank financing more easily.<\/p>
